Artist's Comments

Ludwig Museum, Cologne
Lange Nacht der Kölner Museen.
Title from Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951).

Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen
Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.

What is Art?
Imagine a museum full of monochrome paintings.
Would they still be art?
Is it art just because it is in a museum?
Is it art if you do it first?
Can an artist still respect themselves if in the 21st century they are still painting canvases in monochrome blue, black, red?

I can paint a canvas black, can you?
Why don't we do that?
Why steal artwork on the internet, just paint a canvas black and sell it as art.

I wonder what the artist was trying to tell us by leaving the bottom left hand corner a little blank. Maybe a traumatized childhood? The feeling of being incomplete? Their tan from their last holidays didn't cover their right foot because the towel was lying over it whilst they were sunning themselves?

This picture makes me laugh.

This speaks volumes about the definition of art.
It is proof that such a thing can not be defined, but seen and felt.

So is it art if all you see is black? :)

I took an art history class. And through the entire semester, the professor never gave a definitive definition of art. In fact he only differentiate it from nature by stating it had to be something purposely made by man.
In my opinion, if the artist intended to express their message though a black canvas, then a black canvas is art. Perhaps where I see black, someone else sees nothingness at its fullest, the silent and infinite universe captured.

Well if in fact all that differentiated art from nature was the fact that art was made by man, then anything from the atom bomb to a USB stick could be considered art. I've never come across a definition of art which made me think that it defined art perfectly, nor did the theory of knowledge classes make me find a definitive definition of art. Maybe there isn't one. It's a difficult question, 'what is art?' but I can't help but feel mocked when I go to a museum an see around 10 monochrome paintings (or variations of this). When the artist then titles this works as: blue, or red on blue, black, or yellow on green square, I get the feeling that there is a certain message which is lacking or at least not being conveyed. I'm sure someone sees more in these paintings, but isn't it at some point strange if artist after artist is painting a canvas black (there were at least three in this museum from different artists)? I mean you don't often see copies of a Picasso hanging right next to a Picasso.

When I see these paintings, of course I could interpret these nuances, textures and direct simplicity and minimalism as a symbolic expression of life, art , aesthetics, or emotional and psychological implications about human nature - and maybe it is this that the artist intends. However, I feel I do not need to go to a museum to see a black canvas, for I can draw it myself - and I have, as probably many people who have ever painted something have. There might be something which one can find in these depths of nothingness, but it is probably not going to be intricate artistic painting skill (maybe philosophical thinking whilst moving the paintbrush, sure).

But maybe you are right, and I am just too critical. There are worse evils in the world than monochromatic paintings, so I'll stop trying to say what I am thinking because I am failing miserably and my mind is drifting off to thoughts about sleep and a soft, warm bed (thinking about the definition of art exhausts me I think lol).
